61: Tips for Repurposing Old Podcast Episodes
“Reuse this content over and over again. It’s there for you. It’s at your disposal.”
One of the biggest mistakes I see podcasters make is that they release an episode, promote it everywhere for the following week, and they forget all about it once the next episode is released. It's a cycle of constantly releasing content and then ignoring it.
In this episode, I provide some ideas for how you can make the most of this backlog of fantastic content and ensure that it's not just forgotten.

welcome to podcasting for coaches i'm Britany Felix and i'm a podcast launch consultant who specializes in helping coaches and consultants utilize the power of podcasting as a way to build brand awareness and generate new leads for their business i realize not every new coach or consultant can afford to hire someone to help launch their show so i created this podcast as a way to guide you through the process of launching and utilizing your very own podcast to help you grow your business and reach a new audience of adoring followers and potential clients if you're ready to get your voice and podcast out into the world head over to podcasting for coaches.com to learn more welcome to episode number 61 of podcasting for coaches in this episode we are going to talk about basically what you can do with your own podcast episodes one of the biggest mistakes that i see podcasters make is if they put out an episode they promote it like crazy until their next episode comes out and then they start promoting that one but then they forget about this backlog of content that they have and they never do anything with it so i'm going to give you a few ideas today on how you can really fully utilize these old episodes so the first thing that i want you to do is look at your stats and see if you have any standouts any episodes that have done exceptionally well and you'll know this because if you go to wherever you can find information on your stats you shouldn't be able to get a breakdown by the episode of your downloads so if you have any particular episodes that have quite a few more downloads than all of the rest that means it's an episode that either was shared by a guest or by our audience or one that people really really really resonated with or that was easy to find in search results this is a good indication that this is a topic that your audience is very interested in so i would suggest resharing these episodes if it resonated with your audience once it's going to resonate with your audience again especially if it's been a little while since it was released because you're going to be getting new audience members and new followers all the time that's one of the goals here so don't just assume that anyone who is in your audience now or is following you now has listened to every single episode of your show most of them probably have not so again look for those standout episodes and share them with your audience again on a fairly consistent basis another thing that you can do is actually create new episodes around this same topic if this is a topic your audience is interested in give them more information about it so next if the topic is focused on a particular event for example let's say you did an episode around thanksgiving about practicing gratitude or doing gratitude journaling or anything like that make sure that you not only yes of course record a relevant episode the next thanksgiving but reshare that old one as well reuse this content over and over and over again it's there for you it's at your disposal the next thing that i suggest doing is a best of type of an episode to celebrate a milestone or an anniversary or maybe even the end of the year and you can take clips from your favorite moments of the episodes since the beginning of whatever it was that you're celebrating so either for the entire year if you're doing like a you know a urine celebratory episode or if it's an anniversary everything from the previous year if it's your 100th episode everything from the first 100 episodes and take those little clips and then in the show notes link to the full episodes and compiled together a bunch of your clips of the favorite ones and then maybe even add some information about why that was your favorite episode why this particular clip resonated with you and then make sure that you have links to the full episodes in the show notes similarly if you want to do this to celebrate a milestone or an anniversary or end of the year if you don't want to just do strictly the best you can do your audience favorites and so this is a way to get your audience engaged and to really find out again what's resonating with them so you can have your listeners vote or email you or comment on whatever their favorite episodes are what are the standouts what's resonated with them what's stuck with them what's helped change their life and you can either just do a podcast episode about this where you're explaining what their favorites are and you're you know reading their responses and you're sharing those episodes or better yet if you want to use something like speakpipe they can actually leave you a voice message letting you know what's their favorite and you can play those clips in the episode and then maybe even pull clips from the episodes they're talking about as well the next thing is that you want to pay attention to what is trending on social media and you also want to pay attention to trending social media hashtags and then post any relevant episodes that you have so for example if there's a particular guru in your industry that's trending for whatever reason i know tony robbins right now is in the media because buzzfeed did a huge investigative article on him maybe you have an episode where you share your thoughts on tony robbins and so you want to catch capitalize on the media attention around this particular topic. So share your relevant episodes. Along these lines pay attention to any special days because they're also going to have hashtag relevancy on whatever that day is. So for example, if it's Secretary's day and you have an episode where you talk about hiring a VA, you can spin that so that it's relevant, and you're sharing that content again. Next, if you keep up with your guest, and they have something going on, they're launching a new product, or a service or a course, or a book or a podcast or something is happening with them that they're promoting. You can always share your episode with them again. And then if you talk about what it is they're promoting. So for example, you know, if I were launching a new course, and you had interviewed me, you would do a post of like, this really awesome podcast consultant that I know is launching this really cool new course. And if you want to learn more about her, check out this podcast interview I did with her a few months ago, where she actually hinted about this new product that she's launching, or something along those lines, if you relate it back to what they're doing, and you tag them in it, it's likely that they're going to share it as well, because it's just more promotional material for them to help sell whatever it is that they're launching. And then lastly, you can of course, actually repurpose and repackage this content. One of the things that I did with my very first podcast when I hit Episode 100, I believe, I took all of the resource links. So at the time, it was a travel podcast specifically for people who had like left behind a nine to five, and they were traveling the world. And so we talked about their travels, and the businesses or jobs that they had that allowed them to travel full time. And I asked them, you know, what are their favorite apps? What are the best tools for their business, you know, what other travel hacking sites that they love, I had a ton of resources. So when I hit Episode 100, I took all of those resources and organize them and put them in an ebook. And that was my like, freebie download. So just think about what are some ways that you can take the content that you already have and repurpose this into freebies to get people on your newsletter list, or maybe even audio book that you can sell. Or some people choose to put previous podcast episodes behind a paywall, so that people have to pay to access episodes older than, you know, 90 days. And then the last thing that I want to mention is Don't forget to talk about your old episodes in your new ones. As you're recording content, refer back to your previous episodes. I did this a lot in my last solo episode number 57. And I'm doing it right now I'm referencing back to a previous episode. Because people are there, they're in the moment, they're already listening. And if you have an episode where you have talked about a topic that you're briefly mentioning, but it was further in depth in this other episode, refer them back to that and then they'll go check that out as well. There are a lot of different ways that you can use this old content. And I hope this episode helped kind of get the wheel spinning and sparked some ideas in you on how you can use your old episodes, either to continuously promote your show on social media, or to actually repurpose it into something entirely separate from the podcast.
