What’s This Episode About?

Dr. Lindsay Padilla is an ex-community college professor who accidentally started a business while on the tenure track. Now, as the CEO and co-founder of the Hello Audio software, which takes your content and creates private audio feeds to make learning on the go much easier for your people, Lindsay challenges online industry norms of unfinished courses and unconsumed content with her product.

All of Lindsay’s business ideas were born out of her tenure-track years teaching adults online at a community college, the ridiculous amount of learning she's done in all things education, and the years spent growing her course creation business online.

In this episode, Lindsay shares what Hello Audio is, how it was created with course creators and podcasters in mind, how she personally uses Hello Audio in her own business, unique ways Hello Audio users are utilizing the platform for both business and personal reasons, how it can completely replace course platforms like Kajabi and Thinkific if you wanted it to, why it creates a much easier (and better) experience for your course participants, and more!

Welcome to Episode 108 of podcasting for coaches. This week's guest is Dr. Lindsay budhia. And Lindsey is an ex community college professor who accidentally started a business while on the tenure track. Now as a CEO and co founder of the Hello audio software, which takes your content and creates private audio feeds to make learning on the go much easier for your people. Lindsey challenges online industry norms have unfinished courses and unconsumed content with her product. All of her business ideas are borne out of her tenure track years teaching adults online and a community college the ridiculous amounts of learning she's done and all things education. And the years spent growing her course creation business online. So I have been aware of Hello audio for a few months now at least, it is rapidly becoming very popular in the podcast industry. And I don't really tend to get too worked up about these new tools and been flashy things for podcasters. All these new platforms that are popping up almost daily, it seems because to be perfectly honest, most of them are kind of just different versions of the same thing. And they're probably not going to stick around very long. You can get stuck in that shiny ball syndrome, with every new platform and tool that's popping up and you can chase it and dive into it headfirst and then realize that it's not really going anywhere. I really don't think that's the case with Hello audio. I am incredibly intrigued by Hello audio, and you will learn all about what it is in this episode with Lindsey. And I want you to stay tuned at the end where I'm going to tell you how I personally am using Hello audio for this business. Alright, let's go ahead and jump right on in with Dr. Lindsey PDF.

Lindsey, I am so excited to have you on the show today. I think that what we're going to be talking about is so unbelievably relevant for anyone listening to this. They've heard your bio at the beginning. So let's just go straight into it. What is Hello audio? Whoo, I love this question. And it's such a so we're in raising right now raising capital. And it's like an elevator pitch is so key. So hello. Audio is a platform that takes your premium content and turns it into private audio feeds. So your customers and your clients and your people can listen on the go. And when they listen on the go, that means they're consuming and hopefully getting results from your content. And so what I want anyone listening to think about it is like a way to deliver an audio version of stuff you probably have already created. Okay, perfect. So going a little bit further into that. This is a show about podcasting and creating audio feeds is similar to a podcast. So how is this different from just having a podcast? love that question. So we're going to call this a public podcast. Now mostly people are just like podcast, his podcast, right. And that's pretty true. I think we're starting to have new developments in audio that is allowing us to create higher security use cases. So that would be called private podcasting. So a public podcast is searchable on all the pod catcher apps like apple, podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify. So those are some of the big ones, right? You can go into a podcast app and like search that the show exists, right? So it's public in the sense that you want as many people listening and your goal is to get you know, to be Joe Rogan, right. It's not everyone's goal. So that's a public podcast that you it's searchable. You want to be able to find it a private podcast kind of puts that wall up and says no, you can't find this. Okay, so it's private on that level. It's not in those pod catcher apps. It's not searchable on Google. So this is where the premium content play comes in with Hello audio, but we took it a little bit further because there are companies and podcast hosting companies that do have private podcast feeds, right. And they sometimes give you one or two, you know, and it's definitely paywall. It's like a top tier. Yeah, they often limit the number of listeners you can have that kind of

angle. And so when I set out to create this, I realized that there was a gap for people like you and me, and maybe some of the podcasters listening who actually already have content that their podcast isn't the only thing they do. They have a business. They're coaching, they're running masterminds, or running group programs, or hosting events and summits, those people don't realize that they could make a private podcast version of that content, which would increase consumption. And so my background was, in course, creation, I actually had a private like a private, as we're talking about, like private, I actually had a personal brand, where I taught people how to create better courses, you know, it's built on my experience as a professor, all of those things. And so I taught people how to teach better online. And in that experience, I found myself as a student of many courses, and be a teacher of entrepreneurs that didn't quite know how to teach very well, the right audio as an option was terrible. All people were doing with mp3 is under lessons. And as somebody who cares about education, I'm like, you can say that you're serving that audience who wants to listen to something but the reality is, is have you actually ever tried to download an mp3 to your phone? Great, horrible. So when it comes to user experience, what happens is you download the mp3, it's named something totally wrong. We don't know where it ends up on your phone, like that's good for iPhone, I'm like, Where's this like, play? And then not only that, you want to play all the modules in the lessons in order because it's a course and you're trying to learn something. And so that's when I was like, oh, podcasts have figured it out. Like not only can they potentially play an order, you can change the speed, you can kind of set up your personal features or personal what's the word like things that preferences, that's what I'm looking for personal preferences, you can set that up. And now you're listening in the way that you typically listen to your favorite show, your favorite podcast. So, you know, the impetus for us to build an app that actually served you know, pod, we're essentially a podcast hosting company, we are taking it in new directions. And we could talk about at the end, like where we're going with Hello audio. But in our core, early days of our software, we want to serve podcasters, coaches, consultants, creators, and allow them to make their content more valuable to their users and their customers so they can listen. And that is very different than what most podcast hosting companies are even considering. When they're thinking private, they're thinking about, you see it, because they've been all trying to help people monetize for the last couple of years, right? That's a big problem to solve in the industry. And what that looks like is maybe Patreon, right? give someone $5. Now you have to actually create new shows on top of that, and that overwhelms people. And it's hard to get over that hump where that money makes sense. You and I play in the world of Hey, you should be selling courses and coaching and events. And like if you you know, create that kind of content, your income levels are very different than people who are like hobbyist podcasters trying to make it time. And so we wanted to serve that specific audience. And I built it for us. I built it for people like us. Awesome. Yeah, no, I love it. And I want to kind of start unpacking a little bit here, in terms of how this can actually be used. So if somebody is wanting to use it for a course, what does that look like? they go and they create a feed with the recordings for that course. Is that correct? And then what happens if there's, like PDFs that need to go along with it? Yeah, oh, good questions. And we didn't really get into like the security that we built that might be a little bit different from some of the other public hosting companies. So this is secure content. Amy Porterfield digital course Academy is now on Hello audio. That's a $10,000 programs. So she's wants to make sure people aren't sharing these links all over the place. And All right, so and Hello, audio, we've created a one step like subscribe process, which basically kills the link once it's subscribed. So you can't send me the link and say, Hey, I'm going to forward the email of the onboarding for a nice course and share it right. That's awesome. Yeah, yeah. So we made sure that was like a high priority of security. And we're even coming up with new and unique ways to make that even more true. So that's one thing I wanted to share. This is important content is content that's expensive. There is another side to this that I've always said for any course grader out there. Any video on any platform, no matter how secure it is, is downloadable. Like that's how it works on the internet. Like somebody who knows just a little bit more than the average person, you can download a private video so to run around thinking that creating your you know, $2,000 course is completely piracy proof. It's just not true. So I would even venture to add because it is important to know that once the person downloads and listens to

10:00

The episode that they get in Hello audio, it does end up on their phone, we can't reach back into their phone and pull it out, right. But it also depends on how they've set up their settings. And a lot of people set up their settings to delete the recording once they listen to it. And that's just because we want to maintain storage on our phone. So there's a couple of nuances to it. But I did want to say that, that we can't prevent the person from downloading something that they've already like, bought onto their phone. So to be really upfront about that. But I always say to Amy's course, the value isn't just in the information. It's in right the delivery and the experience and the community that she creates around it, the beautiful PowerPoints in the slides and the templates, that's all in a password protected platform as well. So there are layers to it. And I just want that to be clear for people as they think about whether this makes sense for them. Okay, so now to answer your question about like, what it looks like to create a course feed. So hello audio, we actually invented two different types of fields that don't exist in podcasting. So I just want to like say that too. So what you typically have in podcasting is something that is date based, so you can batch all your your podcasts, everyone knows what I'm talking about log into Lipson right, and you see them all wind up and skin raised and the ones that get released. So that's date based, you know, set up whatever. Well, one thing that we do different than most podcast companies is we actually allow you to bulk upload. And that's because our creators have 57 million towards videos. And so if you log into Lipson, you have to like they're just expecting you to upload one episode a week, isn't that just what podcasters do? And we're like, not if you're like us, and we've created hours of content. So that's one thing about our experience that we made sure was true. Same with we convert video for you to audio, so you don't have to strip that. So all these little nuances. Yeah, that make Hello audio very different and set up more for creators and not quite so much for podcasters. So we invented to the three types of feet. So the other one will sorry, we invented two and one already existed. So one we call an instant feed. And this is the best for courses. So again, back to people who know podcasting and how podcast works and RSS feeds. When you have an episode right? You're you're listening to Brittany as episode if this is a new episode, and you like downloaded on the day that you listen to it, it should be the first thing you see when you go to her feet. Right? Right. If you had to go down a little bit, because you're behind, right, the newer episodes still go on top, even though you're behind, right, you know, course feed, what we would expect a student to feel is that module one, lesson one is at the top. So the course is in quote unquote, order. Yeah. And it is important to point that out because they can mess that all up on their app, and they get to pick how the feed can be delivered. But that made sense from my perspective as a student and a teacher, that module one, lesson one is at the top. And so we are doing some ninja stuff on the back end to make that true. So when you dump your course into Hello audio, you can actually drag and drop the order of the podcast episodes to match typically what's happening in your learning management system like Thinkific or kajabi. Okay, so that's called Instant. And the reason why we call it instant is it's bingeable. And it's delivered all at once. So Amy's team, for example, is not using instant feed because she's delivers her course live. So she's using date base, so she can make sure it releases when her modules release. So it is dependent upon how the course grader wants to deliver. But if you're delivering something that you want your people like pop to have access to it all at once that you would pick instant and so we invented that feed, we do some ninja stuff on the back end, the third feed that we came up with that it doesn't exist right now is drip. So for those of you who have ever maybe joined a challenge, or you know, like 30 days to meditation or something like that, right? Britney signs up, you know, on Tuesday, and she gets her day one, and it's a 30 day thing and she gets a new recording every day, right? So every day, it'll drip a different episode. And you can set that up and hello audio that deliver this, you know, two days after the previous episode, deliver it a week after the previous episode. All right. And then I can come in on Thursday and I start day one on the day that I sign up. So it's set up to when the person enrolls. So I think that's important. We want it to mirror what is happening in the core space, so that your audio, whether or not it's supplemental, we can get into but if it's supplemental, it mirrors what's happening and Thinkific and your other sites it It matches. So those are kind of some of the nuances with course feeds But to your point yeah, you can drag and drop all 50 million videos you have and drop it in Hello audio, you're gonna have to leave for a hot second because that's gonna take some time for us to process. But if it does, and we get you set up it right that way and then then it's your job. Now to go

15:00

Go in and match the titles in the description. But you also brought up workbooks. Right, right. Yeah, yeah. So what what we can do at Hello audio is in the description, we actually hyperlink out. Now, I will say this, and we're working on it on the back end as well, we are basically vulnerable to how apps present their information. So some apps don't allow you to click on a description hyperlink. And that's just important to point out. So you might get some emails from students saying, I can't click on the thing. But the notion that you can have module one, lesson one, and you could say, you know, for access to the workbook, you know, go to kajabi, right, if you want to, like really, really protected, or you could say, for access to the workbook, yeah, download it right here. And like, you know, work through it, while you're listening to this, you get to decide the nuances of your experience. So you actually create an audio based on the course you don't have to log into all these fancy softwares if you don't want to, so that might be a really great, you know, low price, low ticket offer, maybe even something free that they give you their email address for, and you're just helping them consume and do it with audio. So there are some cool things that you can do with the core side of audio. Yeah, no, I mean, definitely wasn't out to me, there is one having that like, Bulk Upload, where you can drag and drop, and it's not date based, and especially the drip those things. I mean, those are huge. Those are how courses work. And that's something that a typical, you know, traditional podcast host would never ever think of ever. I mean, that's just not what they do. And then to I yeah, I it seems like if you really wanted to, you could get rid of Thinkific. Or, I mean, if you don't host with kajabi. And just your courses, you could get rid of that too. So it would actually save you money, most likely. And then if you did have something where you wanted to make it available, like yeah, just put a little disclaimer, hey, depending on which app you're using to listen to this, these links might not be clickable, if that's the case go to and then you could give them like a you know, a password protected just paid on your website, where they can download everything to get rid of the Thinkific and the kajabi. So yeah, no, I definitely can see a lot of use cases for this. So with the people who are using it for like webinars, or masterminds, I mean something where it's not necessarily like here are these 15 recordings in the courses done? How does that work? If it's more like a one off type of a thing? Good question. So that is why we built our unlimited tier, that top tier, because basically, I probably the most power user on the app, as of right now, I think I might have the most active feeds. And that sounds silly for the CEO to be like, Oh, I use it the most like, but it's true, right? Like, you know, Hair Club, you know better than anyone at this point, which is good. Exactly. Not only am I the CEO.

17:45

But I The reason why I bring that up is because I actually have like 20 individual feeds that literally one human being is on the other end of it, not 10s of 1000s one person. So every investor that I engage with gets a recording of a personal message from me thanking them for the meeting, a recording of my pitch with a link to the slide deck. And then like a next step thing, not only that, but they get to see the app that they could potentially invest in, they get to see what the onboarding is like, right? We're also doing a partner kind of outreach, where we're sending little boxes that have a Hello audio plugged, what's the word like iTunes, what's air pod like Brit like knock off, and it says, like, go here. And like take a picture, I basically put a QR code on the top of the box. And I said, I sent you a I think I said secret message or something like that. So they open it in one click. And then I have some audios, they're waiting for them. Again, all instant feed, right? So they play an order. And what's fun about that is that is again, all personal. Like I recorded personal messages for them. I named their programs and say this is this would be great on it. So I bring it up. I'm managing a lot of feeds. And I think what's cool about where Hello, audio went, I mean, like I said at the beginning, I built this because of courses, I built this, so people didn't have to watch videos, fast forward. And then there's all these use cases that allow you to have these really fun one off feeds. And even if you don't take us up on the top tier Unlimited, you know, whatever you can actually archive the feeds in, it frees up like the feed once it's not being used anymore. Once the person doesn't need to access it, you can archive feed, so which is a way also to disable access and stuff like that. But it's really fun. They're like some people are using it in the discovery call process. So they give the discovery call recording, talk about an open loop and then they send a follow up on you later saying this is where all your coaching calls would end up like, right mind blowing. I know my brain is like all the wheels are turning because I'm like, Ooh, it's almost like a Hey, like, this is what your podcast would look like. Like it's like if they worked with me. Oh yeah. Okay, sorry. Go ahead. And the really cool part

20:00

And you're bringing that that part like, Oh, this is what it would look like, I think our wow moment, you know, people listening to this right now, if they already have a podcast, if you can remember the day that you saw your branded podcast cover art show up in iTunes. That's a really cool feeling. Yeah. And I remember it. And I was just like, Whoa, I feel so legit. Yeah, that's one of the reasons like I love working with lunch clients, because like, I get to relive that excitement and that pride, like, over and over and over again with someone. Right? Yeah. So that we get to do for people that maybe never want to have a public podcast, right? So and they and they, for people who like my investors who I send it, I actually like on Canva changed the cover art to say hello, like, I put hello and their name. So it like is on brand new, hello audio, but I'll say their name. And they're just like that was so cool to see my name in your app. So when you can get really personal at that level. So this just speaks to like next level, like using multiple feeds, like having multiple feeds. We even have a user who used it at Christmas time her daughter was learning how to read. And she was practicing reading. And they sent it to their grandparents to be able to like really nice, even like personal, not business related, but really unique ways to use private feeds that you don't want searchable on iTunes, but can actually create the same listening experience that we all know. Right. And I think you kind of that's why we didn't build our own app. We wanted it to be platform agnostic, not tied to any sort of learning management system, but also really accessible where someone doesn't have to download a new app, because that's the hard part. Like I like I know where my podcasts are, when I'm ready to listen to a podcast. So why shouldn't my course material Wait for me there too? Yeah, awesome. So how does that work as the user, do you send them a particular RSS feed they have to input? How does that process work? Ah, great question. And, yeah, so it's super private, we call this a unique link. With any private feed that you create, you have a unique link. But you could also actually have a universal link without getting super complicated. But it just means that you don't care that you know, the email address of every person who listens to it. That is what's really different about public and private is like you're not collecting email addresses from the people who listen to your podcast. And so what we do at Hello audio is we, you know, ask for the email, so then you can send it to their personal email, they get a unique link that is set up just for them. And so the onboarding experience in Hello audio, we can send the email on your behalf. So that's cool. You don't have to set up any sort of fancy system if you don't want to. And we'll deliver that feed to that person and make it look how you want it to look, it has it comes with a button it comes with it pulls in your cover art pulls in the title, and it says start listening. So when the person clicks that, it'll open a subscribe page that is only for them. And they can actually hit some of the top podcast players that they most likely listen to, right, because there are hundreds, but really only like five get used. Correct. And so then you can copy the RSS feed as long as the player or the app that you're putting it into accepts private RSS feed. So there is a big caveat here. Both stitcher and I Heart Radio, and Spotify do not allow you to subscribe. So if Spotify is your favorite app, which is quickly becoming a lot of people's favorite, and yeah, you will have to use a different app for this kind of private content, you will have to listen somewhere else unless Spotify decides to change that I'm not sure that they will. So that is important to say. But yeah, and so the onboarding experience is really great. If you're listening to this, we have an example feed that will teach you how to create your first audio asset that was going to be my next question was talk to me about that. So let's give me all the details on that. Yeah. So if you go to challenge dot Hello audio.fm, you can actually subscribe to our lead magnet, if you will, that teaches you in eight episodes and 45 minutes of content, how to actually find possibly material that you've already created and turn it into a private podcast even, we like to call it an audio asset. Because we actually believe that a lot of content out there can be turned into an audio asset and increase the value of your offers your coaching program, your courses and all of that. And most likely creating that asset will take you like 10 or 15 minutes if you already have the content. So we teach you how to do that walk you through how to think of it and even if you don't have any content created yet you've never launched a course we even teach you how you can launch a course out of it pretty quickly. So that's how you can experience it. You will give us your email address. We will send you the subscribe email and you will you will basically get to enjoy the Hello audio experience. Perfect. Yeah, I know I've been thinking of it myself because like I said, I have that paid monthly newsletter and I wish to God I would have known about something like this when I started that newsletter because I

25:00

would have just done this instead, because I hate writing. There's a reason I got into podcasting. So I mean, I even would have been now considering doing this as well. So that way they can have it in whatever form they want. So they can, I mean, I think there are so many different ways this can be used, and completely unrelated. When you were talking about like reading, you know, around Christmas time and sending it to family. It reminds me I, in non COVID times travel a lot. And I traveled by myself. So obviously, like, my loved ones worry, but they also like want to know what's happening. And I don't necessarily feel like filming video and reading on that upload when I'm, you know, in Europe, and my Wi Fi connection is terrible, because I'm like in the mountains and Scotland. So I feel like this could actually even be a really cool way to like, just keep you know, people updated, like as I'm traveling with stuff that's going on. And I'm not like having to check in with every individual person. So yeah, no, I think there are so many uses for this. So why don't you let everyone know before we wrap up here where they can find Hello, audio Connect within on social media, all of those things? Yeah, so you can find us at Hello audio.fm. That's our main website. As far as social, I think the best way to kind of get into the ello audio world is to join our Facebook group. Okay, it's open even if you're, you know, on trial paid or just like browsing, people share, you know, how they're using it, they get questions asked, you know, of me and my husband who's head of product, it's a great way for us to build connection with our users feature requests come there will ask questions if you guys like I mean, we're a young app, we've been live publicly, like since November, so we're only five months old. So we truly do want to build the thing that makes sense for you, and coaches and consultants and people with content and audiences. That's our ideal kind of avatar. So if you join that group, you can ask me questions directly, you can ask questions of other users, like we always have almost every day somebody like so I'm thinking about doing it like this, Has anyone done it before, because again, it's kind of new and innovative. And so people are experimenting, we're in this kind of experimental phase. So if you're one of those people who's like an early adopter likes to kind of test and experiment with your marketing efforts, you know, jumping on this train early is going to make you a really good to your customers, right, and they're going to love you forever. And so I think the group will kind of help you get comfortable like playing with something that's pretty new. Yeah, for sure. Well, and I mean, if it's good enough for Amy Porterfield, come on, right, and now that that standard has been set as of a few weeks ago, I mean, the world is going to be very different soon. Yeah. So that group, I don't think I dropped the link. The group is called Hello, audio dot community. So you can actually go to that URL. If you just go to Facebook. Also in search, hello, audio community, it should come up. Perfect. Well, we will have links for absolutely everything in the show notes. So Lindsay, thank you so much for being here. This was so much fun. And I have had Halo audio kind of in the back of my mind. But this is definitely the push to like really get in there and test it out for sure. So thank you again, this was awesome. Cool. Thank you so much for inviting me this was a great combo.

28:12

Okay, and that wraps up my chat with Dr. Lindsay pedia. I hope that you enjoyed it. She is a ball of energy and I absolutely adore her. And as I mentioned in the intro, I'm going to share really, really briefly I'm not going to take up too much of your time how I am using Hello audio for podcasting for coaches as a business. I have a an online course for how to launch a podcast for your coaching or consulting business that I currently host on Thinkific and will be transitioning over to Hello audio. However, I have a brand new course that is actually launching this coming week. So the last full week of May 2021. For doing a self audit of your own podcast. Now I offer one on one podcast audits that are personalized. I go in and take a look at everything for your show provides you with a PDF we even can hop on a phone call depending on what package you choose where we go over the results. And I offer suggestions for what you can tweak what you're ignoring completely. And of course what you're doing well so that you can do more of that. Now, I wanted to also offer a self audit because I know that not everyone can afford to hire me to do a personalized audit of their show. Enter Hello audio. So I have actually been creating this brand new course on the Hello audio platform. I am absolutely loving it so far. And I'm even going to be offering and this is like a special little inside scoop for you podcast listeners because I haven't announced it anywhere else yet. At least not publicly that I am going to start offering course creation services using the Hello audio platform. So if you have an online

30:00

course that you would absolutely love for your listeners to be able to consume just like a podcast, I can help you with that I can help you get set up on Hello audio, I can take care of editing the audio for you. If you haven't created the course yet, we can get you set up with all the things you need to be able to set up your recording environment and the equipment, all of those things. So that has not quite launched yet, but that is coming soon. And I really, really really believe that it can help you with your show because my audit clients have been thrilled to death with the results of their audit so far. And if you are curious about the idea of creating an audio version of your course, come back next week where I'm actually going to do an entire episode on the experience of creating my course with Hello audio and how I really really think that it can be used for any coaching or consulting business.
